The farm
140 acres, two generations, one rotation.
Martin's parents bought Coombe Hollow in 1987 as a dairy that was losing money. They put the cows out to a neighbour, fenced off the best south-facing field, and grew leeks. Everything since has grown from that field.
The soil
Eight-year rotation. Nothing synthetic, ever.
We run eight fields in rotation: two years of clover ley to build the soil, then roots, brassicas, legumes, alliums, squash and salads before the clover comes round again. Muck comes from the dairy next door, compost from our own heaps. It is slower and it is why the carrots taste of something.
Inspected every year under fictional certificate DV-0417. The certificate hangs by the shop till, and you are welcome to read the last inspection report over a coffee.
